The European Commission, in compliance with the Digital Single Market and Single Market strategies, recently presented a three-point plan to boost e-commerce, addressing issues with “geoblocking”, with the intention of making cross-border product delivery not only more affordable, but also more efficient. The new rules for Ecommerce in Europe they would also aim to promote consumer confidence, thanks to better protection and enforcement.

As told by Andrup Ansip, who Vice President of Digital Single Market, very often people are prevented from accessing the best offers and promotions when shopping online or simply decide not to buy outside their borders because delivery prices are too high. They are even concerned about their rights in case something goes wrong and the product is not delivered or arrives in poor condition.

The intention of these new rules for electronic commerce in Europe, are aimed at solving the problems that prevent consumers and companies from fully enjoying the best opportunities for buying and selling products or services on the Internet.

For its part, Günther H. Oettinger, who is the Curator of the Digital Economy and Society, has mentioned that the initiative "geoblocking", allows to have an adequate balance between the interests of buyers, allowing them the ability to make purchases online beyond their borders, while offering companies sufficient legal security.

For Elżbieta Bieńkowska, who Commissioner of the International Market, Industry, Enterpreneurship and SIMEs, discrimination between buyers in the European Union, based on Market segmentation along national borders no longer takes place in the Single Market.

For this reason, with clearer rules, a better application and more affordable cross-border product delivery, it will be much easier for buyers and companies, particularly small businesses, to take full advantage of the European Union Single Market and cross-border Ecommerce.
