96% of investors consider talent as one of the main reasons to invest in a startup, according to Talentoscopio

The 96% of them investors that they invest in startups consider the talent internal as one of the main reasons that would lead them to increase their level of investment, according to the First Study on the Talent of Startups  in Spain made by Talentoscope. This study shows that there is currently more money to invest and talented projects are lacking.

Furthermore, this study shows that half of investors consider that investment professionals startups in which it participates lack adaptation to change, and 6 out of 10 acknowledge that they do not have enough information about the level of talent that the team possesses of their future investors, whether they are their partners or the professionals of the startup. On the other hand, 62% of the investors surveyed consider that it is important to know the internal talent of the startups, before making an investment, and 45% recommend candidates for the positions to be filled in the projects in which invest

As shown in the First Study on Startup Talent carried out by Talentoscopio, the investors They give more importance to people than to the idea when investing in a project. However, a good number of them are not entirely satisfied with the personal talent of the team members of those startups in which they have invested. In fact, only 54% say that their founding partners have a high level of talent.

Marta Diaz Barrera, founder of the consulting firm Talentoscopio, comments:

In these moments when investors receive hundreds of projects, they take a very careful look at each of them. Some investors focus only on numbers, while others focus on personal feelings. Beyond the idea, scalability and confirming that there is a market, some investors are beginning to value certain professional skills that give them the certainty that these founders will be able to carry out the project and will fight the money they invest, as if it were the your own.

Investors seek commitment and adaptation to change

Among the traits that investors value most in the founding partners, the study highlights:

  1. commitment,
  2. orientation to results
  3. teamwork
  4. resolution capacity.

On the contrary, according to the study, investors are missing skills such as collaboration and a greater adaptation to change. In fact, one in two investors believes that the professionals of the startups in which they participate lack the ability to adapt to changes.

In this sense, Marta Díaz Barrera declares:

Not all profiles fit to work in all phases of the project. At the beginning, the weight is eminently technological, and highly specialized candidates are sought in certain programming languages, architects, designers. Why? Because testing is a priority and what is sought is to find the business model as soon as possible, to advance to the next phase.

On the other hand, investors encounter problems in the management of the projects in which they plan to invest. In this context, more than 70% of them recognize that they have difficulty finding well-directed projects. In fact, they fundamentally highlight the lack of flexibility of the founders to adapt to changes and the lack of honesty and integrity or poor leadership capacity.

Candidate recommendation

At the time of participating in the conformation of the team of startups in which they enter as investment partners, the Study developed by Talentoscopio indicates that only 45%, less than half, recommend candidates for the positions to be filled. On the other hand, 2 out of 3 investors (65%) define together with the founding partners the profiles of future employees who are and will be necessary in the company.

For Marta Díaz Barrera:

Investors today give more relevance to internal talent. The results of the Study show that 62% of investors recognize that they want to know the real internal talent of each project, before making an investment. For them it is very important to have an in-depth internal Talent analysis, which allows them to know who they have and thus minimize the risk of investment in the team environment.
